How It All Started

The Houston World Series of Dog Shows
NRG Center
Houston, Texas
July 2014
I entered Reufus in Our First Show, after three years of training – from basic obedience to competition level courses. This was a HUGE show in a HUGE venue, with many distractions… and probably not the best choice for a first experience, but we did it!

We entered Beginner Novice Obedience and Rally Novice classes, with the following results:

8 Events
7 Qualifying Scores
6 Placements:
2 Firsts
2 Thirds
2 Fourths
2 Titles
BN [Beginner Novice Obedience]
RN [Rally Novice]
Reufus Jackson Wright BN RN

I will always be super proud of my Little Man for keeping his spirit up over the 4 long days of the show.

Our Rally class was first in the morning and Obedience was last in the evening. It was a long day for a team of introverts!

In hindsight, I overcommitted us.

Four days was a lot to ask of my very green, somewhat silly boy. I could tell he felt the stress stress, but his smile never wavered and that gorgeous tail continued to wag!

We were most excited about the final Obedience run… Heeling was super. Figure 8s were good, but lagging just a bit. Sits in both were slow [cue suspenseful music] but were there. Sit for Exam and Long Sit Stay were perfect. And the Recall was Awesome!

And all these years later, I’ll admit… I was a bit proud of myself for having the courage and commitment to get us to and in the ring. It wasn’t always easy, but we trained hard, had a lot of fun and accomplished this goal.
